Police were called to the home of Christopher Savage (38), on Cooper Close, at 1.40 am on September 24 last year.
The call was made by his partner, who could not get into the house with their eight-week-old child.
Police broke in but it took fi
ve officers to restrain Savage and all six men ended up on a sofa. During the scuffle, Savage swung his arms out and caught one of the officers in the neck.
Mansfield Magistrates Court heard how Savage had suffered with post-traumatic stress, flashbacks and depression, brought on by 15 years in the Army.
The court was also told how Savage had been a hard-working man throughout his entire adult life and that striking the officer was not an intentional action.
However he did admit that he had a short temper and that he had been reckless in resisting arrest.
The injured officer suffered a small cut to his finger and pain to his lower back, the court heard.
Savage, who has also been a private bodyguard, was given a 12-month community order and told to attend an anger-management course.
He was also ordered to pay £455 costs and £100 compensation to the officer.
