A SMARTLY-dressed conman tricked his way into the home of a 93-year-old Bulwell man and stole cash, police have revealed.
Now officers are warning residents to be on their guard after the theft, which happened at about 10 am on Wednesday last week at an address on Highbury Road.

The victim answered the door and was greeted by a man in a suit who claimed to be offerin
g discounted products for people with hearing problems.

The 93-year-old invited him in and, after a brief discussion, was told to go into a bedroom and shout when he heard him knocking on the wall.

After a couple of times, thing went quiet. The pensioner became suspicious and found that the man had left and stolen two wallets containing a quantity of cash.

The suspect is described as white, aged 40 to 50, 5'3" to 5' 6" tall and with a full head of hair.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw someone matching this description.

A spokesman said: "Targeting the elderly and vulnerable is a despicable crime and one that can cause long-term suffering through increased fear and lack of confidence.

"We advise people to take a few simple steps to protect themselves. Do not let in uninvited callers, use a door-chain when answering the door and do not keep large amounts of money at home.

"Do not let anyone pressurise you into answering the door. You are not being rude, You are being careful.

"Always ask for identification and if you're not sure whether the caller is genuine, ask them to return when you have someone with you.

"Criminals go to great lengths to target their victims, dressing smartly or in clothes that look similar to those work by representatives of utilities companies. Often they have the gift of the gab.

"A con artist will not think twice about the impact on their victim. They are out for what they can get. Don't let them in to get away with it."

Anyone with information or who saw the man in Bulwell is asked to contact Oxclose Lane CID on 0115 9670999 or the free and confidential 'Crimestoppers' hotline on 0800 555111 .
