Apply for grants to host kids’ community events

HUCKNALL community groups planning events and activities for children and young people are being invited to ask for cash from Ashfield District Council.

Small grants are available to encourage and facilitate community initiatives involving youngsters from the Ashfield district.

“The council welcomes applications for the small grants from local groups,” said Coun Steve Carroll, portfolio holder for regeneration, culture and housing. “It gives me great pleasure to see what enjoyment the events and activities bring to local families and children.”

A number of ideas have already come to fruition thanks to a cash injection from the council.

These include an event organised by Fun Factor in Hucknall. They received £250 towards a play event in Titchfield Park held in August during the school summer holidays.

The day proved a big hit with youngsters and parents from across the town with over 350 people attending the event.

A popular feature was an appearance of animals from the White Post Farm in Farnsfield.

Fun inflatables were also on hand during the day as were Nottinghamshire Fire Service who showed their support by giving youngsters the opportunity to climb aboard one of their appliances.

Master classes for the new zumba dance craze were also run, while pizza making stimulated tastebuds and provided a tasty treat for many.

Other groups across the Ashfield district benefiting from grants over the past year included Huthwaite Community Action Group, Sutton based Takeover Radio to buy mobile broadcasting equipment so that young people are able to provide coverage at local events and Long Reign Allotments, also in Sutton, to purchase raised bed containers, plants, soil, compost and child size tools for a sensory area to be used by local schools and community groups.

Ashfield Play Forum were another group awarded £250 towards a planned event in July on Sutton Lawn which got postponed due to bad weather but will go-ahead during October half-term.
