Brass band season brings Hucknall trophy success

TRIUMPHANT trumpet, tremendous trombones and committed cornet players helped Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass come away winners from the Bolsover Festival of Brass.

The contest saw 35 bands performing in six sections, with each presenting a piece of music of their own choice and a stand up soloist piece.

The band were very successful and took the first prize in the third section.

Cornet player Ben Armstrong played a solo piece entitled ‘Carnival of Venice’ and was praised for his performance. He impressed the judges so much he took the title of Best Soloist in the competition.

“The band were congratulated by the adjudicator, Ian Porthouse, who said that the band had performed a very good, balanced programme,” said spokesmna Ernest Whyley. “Ben, who played an extremely difficult arrangement, was praised for his performance and was awarded the best soloist in the competition.

“The band’s musical director, Paul Whyley, praised the band for their hard work and the commitment that they had put in to reach this high standard of playing.”

Their success not only brought more silverware to the trophy cupboard with the Raddcliffe International Trophy and the UNISON Bolsover Branch Trophy, but a cheque for £300.

Not only is it brass band contest season but it is also the busiest time of the year for engagements as Christmas and the New Year approaches.

The band, who rehearse in the St Peter and St Paul’s Church hall in Hucknall, are now preparing for the Tibshelf Armistice Remembrance Parade on Sunday November 11, followed by the Leicester band contest on Sunday November 25.
