Cole (5) swims 1,000m

SWIMMING like a fish at just five is sure to set Cole Herman (pictured) on his path to glory following in the strokes of his Olympic swimming heroes.

Whilst many of his fellow five year-olds are still wearing arm-bands and fear the water, this Leen Mills Primary School youngster has just passed his 1,000m challenge, completing 40 lengths of the pool at Hucknall Leisure Centre.

Mum Lauren and dad Ryan, who live on Carlingford Road, Hucknall, are proud of their son’s achievement.

“I couldn’t believe it when he completed the 40 lengths,” said Lauren. “And he says he could have kept going but his lesson had ended and he ran out of time.

“I just don’t know any other five year-olds who can swim like Cole. He is amazing.”

Mum and dad first took Cole swimming at the local pool when he was a toddler, making it a regular Sunday outing. When he was three he had already got his 25m badge and by the time he had reached four, Cole had collected his 200m certificate.

“He joined the Dolphins swimming club when he was four and has been swimming with them since,” added Lauren.

“Despite being one of the youngest members and not being old enough to compete against other clubs, at the interclub challenge he came away with three third-place medals, which he proudly displays in his room.”

It’s still early days to know whether Cole will be a swimming star of the future but he took a keen interest in the Olympic Games over the summer.

Lauren added: “His heroes are Michael Phelps and Rebecca Adlington but it’s too early to say whether his interest in swimming will continue.

“But while ever he enjoys going, we’ll keep taking him.” — DISPIC NHUD12-2815-2
