Creative crafts night at Leenside

CREATING cupcakes was just one of the crafts members of LEENSIDE (HUCKNALL) WOMEN’S INSTITUTE (WI) sampled at their latest meeting.

A ‘four corners’ evening was held, which brought Jo Hackland to the stage to show how to make gift bags.

Carol Davenport and Loretta Beharall then took members through a candle-making demonstration before Leenside member Sandra Green showed how to make a stress-relieving ‘Dammit Doll’.

It was Leenside’s president, Alison Inglis, who showed her expertise in making and decorating cupcakes.

Alison reported on the success of the recent charity stall held on Hucknall Market, which made in the region of £100 for WI funds.

Details were also given of an outing being arranged to the Nottingham Playhouse in November to see ‘Hello Dolly’ and WI county events, including the forthcoming music quiz in October at Oxton and the county holiday to Bournemouth next April.

Tea hostesses for the evening were Rita Childe, Janet Hall, Cath Richardson and Pat Rose. The meeting closed with a report from Jenny Holmes of her recent visit to the WI College in Oxfordshire to study ancestry.

The next meeting will be held at the Central Methodist Church on Tuesday October 16 when David Darby will focus on the theatre in a talk entitled ‘Up In The Gallery’.

n AT LEENSIDE’S August meeting, the talk focused on rock and roll’s golden era of the 1950s.

The guest speaker was Mick Whysall, who took members through the period of bread and sweet rationing and spoke about favourite radio shows, including ‘The Goon Show’ and ‘Have A go’.

But his main focus was on rock and roll and how, in his opinion, it changed the world. A vote of thanks was given by Peggy Cooke.
