Final farewell for League of Friends
IT WAS the end of an era when the final few members of Bulwell’s Highbury Hospital League of Friends met up for the last time to hand over the proceeds of their final fundraising effort.
The group, which has been fundraising for the hospital since the 1950s, has called it a day, blaming a lack of volunteers and changing times.
But before bidding a final farewell, chairman Jackie Jackson and a few other members handed over the remains of their fundraising account — £6,000 — to staff from the Highbury Road hospital.
“It was very sad after all the years of hard work collecting cash for the hospital to know this was our final cheque,” said Jackie. “But times have changed and money is raised in alternative ways nowadays and we failed to attract new volunteers to carry on the Friends’ work.”
Over the years the group has bought a variety of equipment, from televisions to a minibus, for the benefit of patients at the hospital.
