Gritters at the ready as councils get prepared

FROST and ice has already hit the Dispatch district and the cold, winter weather is only just beginning.

Residents are being warned to prepare for the cold months ahead by both Nottingham City Council and Notts County Council.

Both councils say they are prepared for the winter ahead with gritters at the ready, salt stockpiled and improving communications to their residents.

The county council has launched its Gritter Twitter again to give people up-to-the-minute information through the social site.

This Twitter feed has grown in popularity and all followers will receive the latest information on which roads are likely to be gritted and when.

The council grits A and B roads and major bus routes during the winter weather — accounting for around 43 per cent of the county’s road network — and some additional routes during severe weather.

“In an age of social networking and 24-hour news, the council recognises the need to give people ‘live’ information that will help them plan their journey,” said Coun Richard Jackson (Con), chairman of the county council’s transport and highways committee.

Meanwhile the city council, which covers Bulwell, has completed its Winter Service Plan working with schools, hospitals and transport providers to keep things moving safely.

Schools and other services have been provided with salt in advance and workers are ready to grit when and where necessary.
