Hoe, Hoe! Festive gift to theft-hit school

GREEN-FINGERED children from a Hucknall school are delighted they can now continue their gardening projects despite being hit by thieves who took their tools and plants.

Thanks to the generosity of The Co-operative Funeralcare on Main Street, Bulwell and Floralands Garden Centre, Lambley, which have donated replacement gardening goods, youngsters at Annie Holgate Nursery and Infant School can follow through with their potting plans and flower fun next term.

“On behalf of the staff, governors and most importantly, the children of Annie Holgate Infant and Nursery school, I would like to thank The Co-operative Funeralcare and Floralands for their very generous donation of gardening tools and equipment,” said Russell Tew, head teacher. “The replacement tools and equipment will definitely be put to good use by the children throughout the school.”

Children and staff at the High Leys Road school were left distraught after the break-in, which occurred during the summer break and resulted in the gardening projects and tools either being stolen or destroyed.

But the school’s Christmas wishes have been answered thanks to the generous donation of goods from the supportive businesses.

The school’s gardening co-ordinator and teacher, Sarah Thompson, is delighted the school’s gardening initiatives can now continue and is grateful for the kind gifts.

She said: “All the school is involved with each class having their own patch where they plant fruit and vegetables. They are responsible for looking after their own area and then when the produce is harvested, it is cooked in the school kitchen and enjoyed by everybody.

“The children even use the produce in baking classes and have made carrot cakes and pies.”
