Home again after 47 years in New Zealand

PAPPLEWICK-born Jim Shaw is paying his first visit to the Dispatch district for 25 years after emigrating to New Zealand.

He is staying with a close friend, Charles Goodman, of Lime Tree Road on Hucknall’s Welbeck Estate.

Jim (82) lived on Papplewick’s Forest Lane until the age of seven, when his family moved to Church Lane, Linby.

He attended Linby-cum-Papplewick Church of England Primary School and Hucknall National Comprehensive School (now the Church of England Academy).

After working locally for a short time, Jim went into the welding trade and worked at power stations all over the country. These included the nuclear power station at Windscale, Cumberland (now Sellafield, Cumbria).

Jim moved to New Zealand in 1965 after being offered a job to help improve the standard of welding there. His new employers paid for the long flight.

He lived in Wanganui, North Island, but now resides 100 miles further north in the idyllic seaside location of a cottage surrounded by trees.

He and his wife, Aila, who originates from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, have a five-acre cattle ranch where they live.

Jim says he is enjoying his visit but is sad to see several empty shops on Hucknall High Street, while he has noticed a big increase in traffic through the town.

He would like to meet former National schoolmates during his stay. Any wishing to contact him are asked to ring Charles on 0115 9641708.
