ALGEBRA, equations and fractions are child’s play for Hucknall maths whiz MATTHEW BUXTON.

The 16 year-old (pictured) National Church Of England Academy pupil has proved he is top of the class after scoring the highest mark in his GCSE further maths exam with an A* with distiction.

And his proud mum is delighted with her son’s success.

“When Matthew picked up his results he just smiled at me so I knew he had done well,” said mum Kirsteen. “He is very modest and shy but his teacher came over and explained the significance of his mark and said it was the highest in the school.”

Matthew also achieved six A*s, four As and one B in his other subjects, which he managed with only a 75 per cent school attendance record caused by a medical condition.

Kirsteen explains: “Matthew has juvenile ideopathic arthritis and has to be injected with immuno-suppresants each week which makes him sick for a couple of days after.

“He has missed a lot of school but despite this he has done incredibly well.”

Matthew, of Clumber Street, will be staying on in the sixth form to study A levels in maths, chemistry, biology and physics.

Assistant principal Martyn Jobling praised Matthew’s efforts: “This is the first year we have offered further maths to our top mathematicians.

“About 4,500 pupils sit the paper nationally and most are from independent schools. To gain this mark you had to score over 85 per cent across two demanding papers which Matthew did.”

This is the highest mark that any of our students achieved in this exam this year, another 3 students gained the A* but they were quite some marks behind Matthew.
