Memorial tree made possible by Rotarians

THE national president of the Rotary movement, John Minhinick, joined members of the organisation’s Bulwell and Basford club at a special tree-planting ceremony in the grounds of Hayward House Hospice in Nottingham.

For the past five years, the local Rotary Club’s members, led by Marjorie Benson, wife of the late Ron Benson (three-time president of the Bulwell and Basford club), have transformed the grounds at the respite unit, making it more appealing for patients and staff.

While working on the site, Rotarian John Heading made conversation with Jennie Oliver, whose late husband Bill was a patient at the hospice, which is within the grounds of Nottingham City Hospital.

Mrs Oliver expressed an interest in obtaining and planting a tree as a lasting tribute to Bill and Mr Heading suggested that the Bulwell club would be willing to help her fulfil her wish.

Andrew Oliver, who is the site manager at Hayward House, bought a silver birch and also made arrangements for a memorial plaque.

The Bulwell and Basford club’s president, David Smith, helped Mr Minhinick, district governor David Ashley and Mr Oliver in planting the tree in the company of Bill’s family, Rotarians and supporters of the hospice.

Putting the plaque in place, Mrs Oliver said: “The Rotarians have been kind, caring and have enabled myself and my family to fulfil our wishes.”
