On-the-up school celebrates success

A BULWELL school which had one of the highest exclusion rates among primaries in Nottingham is celebrating significant progress in tackling the problem.

St Mary’s Church Of England School, under the ‘firm but fair’ leadership of head teacher Daniel Farthing and executive head Rebecca Meredith, has made giant strides and the efforts of its pupils were recognised at a special assembly.

In front of special guests, including members of Bulwell and Basford Rotary Club, such as president David Smith, and school attendance officer Emma Raynor, Mr Farthing made presentations to several pupils.

Pride of place was reserved for Adam Ensor, who hasn’t had a day off in three years. Twenty other pupils have chalked up 100% attendance in the last year.

Each time a pupil achieved a week of perfect attendance, they were given a ‘golden ticket’, which was put into a prize draw with a chance of winning a bike.

The cycle was given to the school by the Rotarian George Bagshaw who recently died.

Members of the school council were also presented with engraved pens to celebrate their efforts.

Other awards were for sporting excellence, ‘Playground Buddies’ were recognised and certificates were handed out.
