Park memorial to teen killed in road tragedy

A £74,000 park at Bulwell’s Snape Wood is a fitting memorial to a teenager who was tragically killed in a road accident, says his mum.

Fifteen-year-old Ashton Hazell died after he was in collision with a car on Low Wood Road, Bulwell in May 2004.

He was the son of Leroy Hazell (47) and Diane Good (42), of Corben Gardens, Snape Wood, and went to Bulwell’s former River Leen Comprehensive School.

The park, on Snape Wood Road, has been officially opened by Diane and is named Ashton Park in tribute to the teenager.

Improvements have been carried out there by environmental group Groundwork and the Friends of Snape Wood Nature Reserve.

The fatal accident to Ashton is thought to have happened when he stepped into the road to get a basketball.

The park meant a lot to Ashton and he had consistently pressed for a basketball court there. The decision to install one was made by Nottingham city councillors shortly before Ashton’s death and it was eventually provided in 2007.

As well as catering for young children, the park also now has play equipment for youngsters aged eight and over. The city council supported the improvements, which were carried out after consultation with residents.

WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd) and the Biffa award scheme have provided funding for work which includes new fencing and side panels for the basketball court.

Diane (42), of Corben Gardens, Snape Wood, said: “The family is still trying to come to terms with Ashton’s death but it is comforting to know that children can play in safety on the much-improved park.”
