Pub and brewery raise a glass to real ale.....

TWO Hucknall businesses are raising a glass as they launch a bid to encourage more people to try real ale.

Jacqui and Lee Burton, licensees of the YEW TREE pub, have teamed up with town microbrewer Anthony Hughes to create a ‘brewery tap’ at the Nottingham Road local.

Anthony runs the LINCOLN GREEN Brewing Company, based on Wigwam Lane, which has made big strides since it was formed earlier this year.

Real ales from Lincoln Green will be permanently on offer, together with guest ales from other Nottinghamshire microbreweries.

The new venture has led to the Yew Tree, one of Hucknall’s oldest pubs, being accredited as a ‘LocAle’ pub by the Nottingham branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

“LocAle is an initiative that promotes pubs stocking locally-brewed real ale,” said Andrew Ludlow, of Nottingham CAMRA.

“The scheme builds on a growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of ‘green’ issues. The Nottingham branch created it in 2007 because we wanted to help support the tradition of brewing within Nottinghamshire.”

Jacqui said: “Lincoln Green beers have been popular with our regulars and they like to know the beer has been supplied by a brewery within their community. We’re delighted to support this new local business.”

Anthony commented that real ale offered a broad range of flavours and differing styles. He added: “With the current popularity of micro-brewing, there’s sure to be a beer to suit every taste.

“Joining up with the Yew Tree will give Hucknall residents a chance to try beers that have been brewed on their doorstep and haven’t had to travel long distances to reach them.”

There are now more than 1,000 microbreweries within the UK, 38 of them in Nottinghamshire.
