Sports groups told to apply for share of £1m

It’s time for Dispatch district sports organisations to put in grant bid from Notts County Council’s £1 million sports legacy fund.

That’s the message from London 2012 gold medallist and ‘blade-runner’ Richard Whitehead. He has endorsed the fund, which has now opened for applications.

The council has announced the fund for local sports clubs in the wake of a fantastic summer of sport at London 2012. The idea is seen as a trailblazer nationally and has already received the backing of the Local Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (aralympic Games (LOCOG), Lord Coe, who described it as a ‘fantastic’ example of such a scheme.

Interested clubs should visit the county council website: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/legacyfund to apply.

The £1m fund has been proposed to respond to the legacy challenge created by the 2012 Games, and to maintain the momentum of increased sports participation that has been generated by them.

The county council’s culture committee chairman, Coun John Cottee (Con), said: “We are committed to building on an unforgettable year of sport. This investment announcement is good news for everyone because it means making funds available to promote sport, health and well-being.”

The scheme will be designed to support local sports clubs to retain and grow membership and will focus on supporting clubs to buy much-needed equipment and/or to support small/medium sized capital improvements to facilities. Clubs can bid for two different streams of funding, both of them designed to support local sports clubs to retain and grow membership and to focus on supporting them to buy much-needed equipment.

The funding streams are Kick Start, with applications for between £500 and £1,000 invited, and Game Changer, which deals with applications for between £10,000 and £50,000. The closing date for applications is December 31.
