Support armed forces through Poppy Appeal

THIS is an important time for the Hucknall, Bulwell and Old Basford branches of the Royal British Legion as the country gears up to remember fallen soldiers.

The annual Poppy Appeal is in full swing until the traditional Poppy Day, which falls a week on Saturday (November 10).

Hucknall’s appeal organiser, Barrie Straw, said: “People have always been generous in their support and we are obviously hoping it will continue this time round.

“A lot more servicemen and women are coming home from Afghanistan in need of the support which the Legion offers, so the organisation’s role is as important as ever.”

Mr Straw arranges the appeal not just for Hucknall but also in Kimberley and Nuthall. The total raised for this area last year was £20,256.41

Nationwide last year, the Poppy Appeal raised £40 million and this year’s target is £42 million.

“All the money raised goes towards providing much-needed support for members of the Armed Forces and their families,” said Mr Straw.

“The organisation’s welfare work is a lifeline for thousands of service and ex-service people.

“This can include adapting a home to make it suitable a disabled young soldier, providing a free dedicated ‘handyperson’ service where this is needed, carrying out small repairs and minor alterations in homes, or providing support such as pension advice or bereavement counselling.”

By next year, the Legion aims to have five fields in different parts of the country where people can plant a tribute for those who gave their lives for their country.

Legion members also organise trips to the Menin Gate in Belgium, which is dedicated to British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed at Ypres in World War One but whose graves are unknown.
