MORE than 100 people were forced out of their homes in Annesley because of a huge fire in a nearby paint factory.
The alarm was raised at 5.30 pm and the building, on Newstead Road, was severely damaged.

Police advised residents to close their windows because of the acrid smoke but, as the blaze became more extensive, 117 residents were asked to leave.

They were directed to the parish hall but that building also had to be evacuated and the residents then made their way to Annesley Welfare.

It was not until around midnight that the residents were able to return to their homes. No injuries were reported.

At the height of the blaze, ten fire engines from across Nottinghamshire were at the scene.

One resident, Lisa Summers, said: "We could hear explosions and there was massive smoke. You could feel the heat and it was a horrible experience."

"My mother lives nearby and thought it was fireworks. She stayed with me until she was able to go home again."
