Market-Place 'stunt' to herald services boost

AN INTRIGUING 'stunt' will be staged on Hucknall Market Place tomorrow to mark the launch of ambitious plans to make the town 'cleaner, safer and greener.'
Earlier this year, Ashfield District Council unveiled a far-reaching corporate plan that pinpointed an extra £5 million to be spent on frontline services over the next three years.
A key feature of this was a pledge to spend more than £1 million on tackling 'environmental crimes' and residents who are guilty of everything from dropping litter and fly-tipping to daubing graffiti and allowing their dogs to foul.
Now the council have completed the work behind the scenes and the pieces are in place to fully launch their plan with a two-day roadshow, which is on Market Place tomorrow and at Titchfield Park on Sunday.
The event (running from 11 am until 3 pm on both days) will coincide with similar roadshows in Sutton, Kirkby and Selston with the highlight in Hucknall being the hush-hush 'stunt'.
Details have not been revealed, but the Dispatch have been promised that it will be hard-hitting and will vividly illustrate the problems faced in tackling environmental issues.
Another highlight of the roadshow will be the introduction of a neighbourhood team charged with cleaning up streets and parks in the town.
As part of the initiative, the town will also have a tailor-made charter setting out the services residents can expect to receive from the council, priorities – ranging from weeding to removing abandoned vehicles – and emergency contact numbers.
In the document, the council's leader, Coun Jason Zadrozny (Lib Dem) states: "We are deeply committed to providing excellent quality, value for money services and this charter will help you (residents) play a part in making Hucknall cleaner, safer and greener."
The council's head of neighbourhood services, Edd De Coverley, said the initiative was all about improving standards.
He added: "We will repair street lamps, cut the grass and move litter so that when we move through an area the whole environment is uplifted.
"We want to be out on the streets asking people what they want and allowing them to hold us to account. We will remove resources depending on what is needed."
The Sunday portion of the roadshow at Titchfield Park will have a sports theme with tournaments ranging from bowls, tennis and golf being staged with prizes for the winners.
It offers a chance for residents to check out what has been done at the park as part of a £1.5 million masterplan and to see what's on offer from the town's premier open space.
The 'cleaner, safer, greener' initiative has also received backing from opposition members on the council, including Hucknall's long-serving Coun John Wilmott (Lab), who said: "I welcome this, because when I speak to people, the big issues are dog-fouling and fly-tipping."
