Band best of Midlands at bumper brass contest

NEWSTEAD Brass are celebrating after finishing as the highest-placed Midlands entrants at the Leicestershire Open Brass Band Contest.

Newstead’s principal euphonium Lynden Cooper was also awarded ‘best instrumentalist’ in the competition.

With over 70 entries and 12 bands from across the country competing in the open section, it is a popular competition.

Adjudicator David Read said there were five ‘very good’ performances, any of which could have won a similar contest.

Newstead performed ‘Between the Moon’ and ‘Mexico’ by Philip Sparke and were awarded fourth place.

“Our musical director Duncan Beckley was pleased with how the band played on stage and so we are a little disappointed to have missed out on a ‘podium’ finish,” said a band spokesman. “We’re delighted to have proven we’re again one of the top Midlands brass bands and particularly pleased that the contribution of our principal euphonium Lynden Cooper was recognised with the award for best instrumentalist.”

The band are now preparing for the busy Christmas season ahead with many dates planned to perform in around the district.

The first of which is tomorrow, Saturday December 8, at St Peter’s Church in Nottingham.

Their festive performances conclude at Hucknall’s Central Methodist Church on Thursday December 20 for the Sounds Like Christmas show.
