Brass band sign off 2012 with concert at church

HUCKNALL and Linby Mining Community Brass Band rounded off a very successful 2012 with a sell out Christmas concert in the town’s historic parish church.

The enthusiastic audience were enthralled with the music selected by the band’s musical director, Paul Whyley, which contained seasonal and traditional music. They started the concert with music from the film, ‘Brassed Off’, called ‘Death or Glory’. Other highlights were the band’s principal euphonium player Jon Clare playing an evocative arrangement of the carol called ‘O Holy Night’.

It was a family affair for Jon who had his wife Liz and son David helping the band and his daughter, Emily, who is a cornet player, performing with the band.

Emily sang the solo first verse of the carol ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ with the band and audience joining in for the other verses.

Emily received rapturous applause for her performance.

Another highlight was when Paul invited all the young people in the audience to join the band by ringing bells to the band’s version of ‘Jingle Bells’.

He finished up with a little squad of enthusiastic young bell ringers accompanying the band. The audience were then asked to join in with movements to the tune called ‘Schneewalzer’.

It sparked much laughter when Paul went around the audience trying to get them in time while the band played. The Rev George Knowles, an associate priest at the church, thanked the band.
