Choir who sparkled for Queen set to mark their own diamond jubilee

HAVING earned the royal seal of approval for their performance at Vernon Park in Basford during the Queen’s visit to Nottingham to mark her Diamond Jubilee, Bestwood Male Voice Choir are hoping to repeat the dose during a concert to mark their own 60th anniversary.

Months of rehearsals at Bestwood Village Social Club have stood the long-running choir in good stead and the 50-strong contingent, led by musical director Mirek Rus, can’t wait to take to the stage.

The landmark jubilee concert is being staged at Nottingham’s Albert Hall on Sunday September 23 and the choir will be backed by the dynamic ensemble Be Vox and David Butterworth, who will be playing the Binns Organ.

Among the Bestwood choir’s ranks is 95-year-old bass singer Bill Pilkington, of Bulwell, and six other members who are aged 80 or above.

“We are looking forward to staging our 60th anniversary concert at the Albert Hall, which is a wonderful venue,” said Bill.

“Over the years we have raised thousands of pounds for good causes and we have chosen the Maggie’s Cancer Centre as the beneficiary from our extra-special concert, tickets for which are on sale now.”
