Cooking oil recycled to power Dispatch district

AN innovative scheme to recycle cooking oil is providing ‘green’ power for the Dispatch district and the rest of Nottinghamshire.

Enough energy, in fact, to make 1.5 milliion cups of tea, according to Veolia Environmental Services.

Notts County Council has joined forces with Veolia to pass on oil collected at recycling sites to eco-firm Living Fuels, which turns it into ‘green’ energy.

The chairman of the county council’s environment committee, Coun Richard Butler (Con), said: “This has proved to be a very worthwhile project. We are delighted to extend the service across the whole county to enable all residents to become involved.”

The used oil is collected and taken to Living Fuels’ recovery plant, where it is turned into a clean bioliquid. This is used to provide carbon-neutral electricity to the National Grid.

Living Fuels spokesman Rob Murphy said the scheme was an excellent way to get rid of difficult waste.

He added: “It is very encouraging to see residents taking so well to this service.”
