Ensemble hit high notes to help save babies’ lives

SINGERS and musicians with the Hucknall-based Torkard Ensemble have hit the high notes in aid of a charity that saves the lives of babies.

The concert was on behalf of Tommy’s, which carries out research into childbirth and pregnancy problems, such as miscarriage and stillbirth.

Staged at Nuthall Methodist Church, a full house showed its appreciation with rousing applause after an impressive programme.

The choice of Tommy’s as the beneficiary was particularly meaningful for Carolyn Talkes, who helped co-ordinate the event.

For she and her husband, Chris, who live in Hucknall, sadly lost a baby to miscarriage and the support they received from Tommy’s was greatly appreciated.

The Torkard Ensemble, led by musical director Anthony Dean and Sally Watson gave a delightful show of their talents.

A splendid ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ number had panache with accompaniment from guest guitarist Matt Jones. A superb rendition of ‘Rhythm Of Life’ and a version of ‘Bridge Over Troubled Waters’ were highlights.

The combination of excellent singers and equally impressive musicians are admirable qualities of the ensemble, whose concerts in the past have benefitted Christian Aid and Hucknall Parish Church’s tower -repair appeal.

Overall, the concert raised £500 for the charity.

A delighted Carolyn said: “Our group, which rehearses at East Side Methodist Church in Hucknall, is pleased to help such a worthy cause.

“My husband and I experienced the pain and distress miscarriage can bring and Tommy’s helped us to cope with the traumna.”
