Healthy ‘Fun On The Forest’

A FULL programme of health-boosting activities was enjoyed at a special event on Bulwell Forest recreation ground.
The initiative was organised jointly by the Bulwell Forest and Rise Park Action Groups, together with Top Valley Tenants and Residents Association, Bulwell Vision, the Right Track organisation and Nottingham City Council, which provided a grant of £600 towards the cost of the project.
Bulwell Forest Action Group secretary Bill Blackamore said: “This event was all about encouraging people to do more exercise and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
“We pulled out all the stops with a wide range of attractions and we had a very encouraging response. I hope people who attended the event found it worthwhile and felt better for taking part the activities.”
One well-supported attraction was a group cycle ride to and around the Mill Lakes at Bestwood Country Park. This was run by Ridewise, a not-for-profit community enterprise which aims to make cycle enjoyable but also safe.
Ridewise works closely with primary care trusts, universities, councils, transport groups, sporting and leisure teams. It also regularly liaises with community organisations, youth groups and primary schools.
Cycles had free safety checks by ‘Dr Bike’ and people had a chance to try their hand at riding different bikes.
The country park was also the destination for a family health walk.
Five-a-side football matches were arranged and representatives of Notts County Football Club were there to supervise a penalty shoot-out.
There was also a penalty shoot-out at netball and among other attractions were live music, an appearance by a marching band, a bouncy castle, face painting and a children’s arts and crafts workshop. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service also turned up with a fire engine.
With the accent very much on health and fitness, tests were given for blood pressure, flexibility and stamina.
Mr Blackamore said he was delighted with the success of the event, which proved an excellent follow-up to the official opening of Bulwell Forest community garden, off Austin Street, the week before.
