Historic Japanese Water Gardens makeover

The historic Japanese Water Gardens at Bestwood Country Park have been given a makeover, thanks to local volunteers.

Gedling Borough Council’s parks development team, working in partnership with the Friends of Bestwood Country Park, the Monday Volunteers and local residents, tidied up the ornamental gardens to stop them` deteriorating back under brambles and leaf mould.

The water gardens are a historical ornamental area of the park. They were commissioned by the Duke of St Albans’ family during the early 20th century and were designed using stone, water and Japanese trees and planting.

The country park is owned and maintained by Gedling Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.

Coun Jim Creamer, portfolio holder for environment at Gedling Council, said: “The gardens are a significant and historical part of the country park. It is important for us to restore them to their former glory.”
