Historic songs by Coates handed over to library
GREAT excitement is mounting over three newly-discovered songs by Hucknall-born composer Eric Coates.
They are to be performed for the first time at the annual concert organised by the Eric Coates Society at the Central Methodist Church, Hucknall, on Saturday October 6.
Notts County Council’s lead member for culture and community, Coun John Cottee (Con), took part in an official presentation of bound copies of the songs at Hucknall Library yesterday (Thursday).
All three songs were written by the young Coates before he went to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London at the age of 20.
It all began when society secretary Peter Butler was contacted by a Devon woman, Ann Parsons, who told him she had some music written by Eric Coates and inquired if the society could find them a good home.
The society gratefully accpted the offer, not knowing quite what to expect, but they proved to be genuine, original, hand-written songs.
Mrs Parsons (62) was given the three pieces by her pianist father, the late Charles Frizzell.
“I have no idea where they came from,” she said. “I did not pick up the scripts until my father died.
“I’m amazed that they have been in my house for at least 18 years and they are now creating huge interest.”
Two of the songs, ‘Love’s Philosophy and ‘To A Maiden’ were dedicated to Sybil Welsh and the third, entitled ‘Tit For Tat’, was composed ‘expressly for’ Celia Welsh (probably Sybil’s sister) with a note, ‘to dear little Celia with best love from Eric April 11 1907’.
Society chairman Geoff Sheldon said: “It is appropriate that the songs will be performed for the first time in the town where Eric was born.”
