HUCKNALL’S historic Merlin Flying Club has been marking its 50th anniversary with a number of events this year.

Its latest venture is with the production of a DVD, which puts into words and pictures the club’s five decades spent flying around the town.

Member Colin Anthony has put this commemorative disc together telling some of the club’s long history and highlights over the years.

“I have produced this one hour 40 minute DVD to tell at least some of this long story,” said Colin. “The discs are priced at £10 each and all proceeds will go to club funds.”

The Merlin Flying Club has operated from Hucknall Aerodrome, which is based on the Rolls-Royce site off Watnall Road, since 1962 and was originally set up to provide cost-effective flying for the workforce.

One of Hucknall’s annual calendar highlights is the Wings and Wheels Pageant that is organised and put on by the club and attracts people from far and wide.

It features vintage aircraft, air displays and classic cars amongst its activities and is a big success.

But, as reported in last week’s Dispatch, the club’s home is under threat by the multi-million-pound masterplan for a huge expansion of the Rolls Royce site.

Plans for 900 new homes and a business park covering 100,000 square metres are proposed for the area — putting the future of the flying club in jeopardy.

Hucknall’s Air Training Corp squadron is also under threat as it too has a base at the aerodrome.

The squadron participate in many of the town’s activities including the Remembrance Sunday Parade.
