Hucknall’s Sophie stars in city lights switch-on

ONE of the stars of Nottingham city centre’s spectacular Christmas lights switch-on was a talented teenage singer who hails from Hucknall.

Thousands of revellers got into the festive spirit as Nottingham was transformed into a winter wonderland with twinkling fairy lights and the Old Market Square became a festive market.

One of the acts was the singer Sophie Debattista (pictured), who shone on the Capital FM stage.

The 18-year-old Anglo/Maltese performer, who represented Malta in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest at the age of 12, has been touring the UK over the summer and is continuing with a mini-Christmas tour promoting her new single ‘Sunny’. Her mum’s family has roots in Hucknall.

This latest record is a remake of the Bobby Hebb classic and is released on Sunday December 9 through Absolute Marketing/Universal Music.

After a summer performing at festivals in London, Manchester and Norwich, this is the closest Sophie has been to her Hucknall roots for some time.

This year’s switch-on event was attended by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Coun Mick Wildgust (Lab), who lives in Bulwell.

As well as Sophie to keep the crowds entertained, there was street performers including panto characters, break dancing Santas and the Lost Elves complete with Rudolf the Reindeer. The Nottingham Jazz Ensemble and Nottingham Music School also performed.
