Charging horses and fully armoured knights clashed in spectacular medieval action as heroes from all four corners of the country gathered at Bolsover Castle for English Heritage’s Grand Medieval Joust.

The highly trained and athletic knights and horses represented the elite of this oldest of extreme sports, fully dedicated to the art of authentic jousting.

Wearing the colours of their region – North, South, East and West - the troupe of four courageous knights in full armour, authentically recreated and personally fitted, battled in the main arena.

For children inspired by the actions of their chivalrous heroes, there was a Knight School to get involved in complete with junior jousting, mock battles and armour to try on for a great family day out.

Amongst the heat of the contest there was mischief and mayhem from the court jester, displays of firepower and performances of medieval music. Costumed re-enactors went about their daily lives and there was a display of medieval falconry.
