New community choir are on song
A NEW Bulwell-based choir is on song as it looks forward to a bright future.
Bulwell Community Choir holds practice sessions at the town’s new Riverside Centre on Wednesdays from 6 pm to 7.30 pm.
The project began earlier this year when Nottingham City Council’s library service attended an event in the style of TV’s ‘Dragons’ Den’ to win £500 for setting up the choir.
Although the bid proved unsuccessful, councillors from the Bulwell and Bulwell Forest wards were so impressed that they each gave £150 from their personal ‘pots’ for good causes to help launch the choir. A further boost came in the shape of a £200 grant from the library service.
The choir proved well in harmony with the Bulwell community when it ran for 12 weeks during the summer. A highlight came when the members performed to an audience of about 100 people at the Riverside Centre in July.
It was originally thought that the choir would only have a limited life but the members want it to become a permanent fixture.
The city council’s development librarian, Kam Harte, said: “The members are very enthusiastic about the choir making a name for itself in Bulwell on a long-term basis.
“The underlying idea of forming the choir was to bring the community together on a social footing. The members are obviously encouraged by the favourable impression they have already made.”
The choir has made history as Bulwell’s first community choir and it has 17 members, including two children. It is run by Judith Fox, of the library service, and Susan Newham provides keyboard accompaniment.
A rapidly-growing repertoire includes ‘English Country Garden’ while one of the choir’s favourite numbers, ‘We All Stand Together’, could be said to sum up its positive united spirit as it aims for a flourishing future.
With its own constitution and bank account, the choir is currently applying for funding and it would also welcome new members.
Anyone aged seven and over is welcome, although children must be accompanied by an adult. The choir particularly needs new male members, especially tenors.
