New H2O bar set to make a big splash in town centre
THE ambitious new H2O BAR in Hucknall town centre will be open to the public from next Friday (October 19).
The bar, formerly Martins the newsagents, is in a prime position on High Street near the junction with the Market Place.
Well-known Hucknall personalities Ben Marshall and Brian Willows are partners in the initiative.
“When we took over the building a few months ago, it was nothing more than a shell,” said Ben.
“We have given the premises a complete makeover at a cost of thousands of pounds. We hope that when the public start to come, they will appreciate the time and investment which have gone into the project.
“The premises are quite large and this has given us plenty of scope for what we want to achieve.”
Ben said the bar would have a cafe atmosphere in the daytime, with people able to pop in and enjoy a piece of cake and a cup of tea.
Light music will be another feature and gigs by talented bands will take place on Saturday nights. A band which bears Ben’s name will be the first to perform at the venue on Saturday October 20.
Ben added that a ‘live lounge’ would take place once a month with entertainment by ‘some of the best artists from around the Midlands’, while it would also be an opportunity to encourage and showcase local talent.
“We very much hope the H20 will contribute to a re-birth of town centre and it will fit in perfectly with pedestrianisation of this section of High Street if and when this goes ahead,” said Ben. “We want to establish a good working rapport with other licensees in the town centre.”
He said the bar would create jobs for ten bar and catering staff and the idea of taking on apprentices was being explored.
“We realise the importance of people feeling safe and door staff will be recruited as a precautionary measure,” said Ben.
Brian, who was formerly in charge of Hucknall’s Rolls-Royce Leisure Club said his 20 years in the licensed trade would prove beneficial in this exciting new venture.
The final phase of setting up H20 is currently in hand and plastering work took place on Wednesday.
Why H20? “No special water connection — we just thought it was a catchy-sounding name,” said Ben.
