Newstead Brass ready to unveil ‘Songs From Shows’

THE award-winning Newstead Brass band are making a return visit to Mansfield’s Palace Theatre later this month following on from their acclaimed performances last year.

Newstead Brass and Voices will present a new concert called ‘Songs from the Shows’ featuring popular classics such as ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables as well as music from ‘West Side Story’ and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber on 23rd September.

Last year, Newstead Brass wowed audiences when they appeared in a well-received production of ‘Brassed Off’ at the Palace and also performed in ‘Not Much Matches Mansfield’ earlier this summer.

The 30-piece Newstead Brass performs around the UK, as well as at festivals and competitions.

Duncan Beckley has been the group’s musical director since 1989 and during that time, the band has collected a host of prizes.

It has twice represented the Midlands in the finals of the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall, in 2006 and 2009, achieving a top ten finish in 2009.

For this production, Newstead Brass have joined forces with the Carlton Male Voice Choir and solo vocalist Sam Barson.

Nineteen-year-old Sam, who is currently studying print journalism at Nottingham Trent University, started singing at the age of eight after auditioning for the part of Oliver with Heanor Operatic Society.

Sam has gone on to play many numerous lead musical roles, including Tony in ‘West Side Story’ at Nottingham Playhouse and Roger in ‘Rent’ at Nottingham Arts Theatre. He is also a member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. Last year the choir appeared on the BBC Proms.

The concert will be at the Palace Theatre on Sunday September 23 at 7.30 pm.

Tickets are £8.50 (£7.50 for concessions). Block bookers can buy ten and get the 11th free. For details call Mansfield 633133 or visit www.mansfield.gov.uk/palacetheatre.
