Stub out smoking during Stoptober

SMOKERS in Hucknall are encouraged to take part in the first-ever mass quit attempt, called Stoptober.

The Ashfield district has an above-average number of smokers and health officials are hoping the 28-day initiative, starting next Monday, will help them to kick the habit.

The Department of Health campaign is being supported by National Health Service (NHS) Nottingham and Notts County Council.

Statistics show that smoking contributes to 83% of all lung cancer, bronchitis and emphysema deaths.

Smokers are more than twice as likely as non-smokers to die from heart disease.

And passive smoking can kill non-smokers just as much as the smoker himself.

The campaign also stresses the financial impact of smoking, with the cost of cigarettes going up all the time.

“We hope the campaign will really bring home the need to stop smoking,” said a spokesman.
