Tribute concert to follow Diamond Jubilee bash

SINGING their way to continued success are Bestwood Male Voice Choir (MVC) after their sell-out Diamond Jubilee concert.

Nottingham’s Albert Hall attracted a packed audience for the concert, which was held on Sunday September 23.

Now the group, who are based out of Bestwood Village, are set to take to the stage again later this month to perform a tribute concert in honour of founder member Frank Wright.

The event will take place at 7.30 pm on Saturday October 27 at Hucknall Parish Church.

Tickets are priced at £6 with proceeds going towards a £150,000 restoration fund to repair the historic venue’s tower.

Another tribute concert is planned for the New Year in the name of the late Len Hogg, who set up the choir.

This will be held on Saturday January 26 at 7.30pm at Watnall Road Baptist Church, Hucknall.

Reflecting on the Diamond Jubilee event, concert secretary David Riley said: “Bestwood gave a full and varied programme led by musical director Mirek Rus, which was extremely well received by the audience who were very appreciative and gave a standing ovation.

“The second half of the programme opened with a very poignant and moving rendition of ‘Take Me Home’, with the surprise addition of six retired miners entering a darkened Albert Hall, dressed in authentic mining clothes and helmet lamps shining brightly.”

This was a tribute to the choir’s roots. The choir was founded in 1952 by Mr Hogg who, at the time, was the new manager of Bestwood Colliery.

David added: “The concert finale was a very stirring performance of ‘Amazing Grace’, which included Bestwood, BeVox, the Binns organ, as well as Timothy Allen on the grand piano.”
