Winners’ trophy for Hucknall and Linby Brass band after contest

TRUMPETS, trombones and tubas were just some of the instruments played in Leicestershire Brass Band Association’s open contest.

But it was the musicians of Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass who called the tune by taking the top title in their section to continue a winning streak launched by glory at the recent Bolsover Festival.

Under the musical leadership of Paul Whyley, the band competed against 11 other bands and were drawn to play last in their section.

“Paul praised all of the band for their dedication and expertise in mastering the very difficult piece of music called ‘A Gallimaufry Suite’,” said band spokesman Ernie Whyley.

“The band will repeat this piece for the Butlins Band Festival contest in January.”

A shield trophy, winners’ certificate and £250 was awarded to the band in Leicestershire.

Also taking a prize home was a former Hucknall and Linby euphonium player who now performs with Pleasley Colliery Band.

Nick Harris won the best soloist prize and is passing on his skills to his young son Lauren who plays cornet with Hucknall and Linby.

The band is now gearing up for their full Christmas programme of events across the district.
