THE BELATED start to Hucknall Town's new season in the Blue Square North ended in defeat at Watnall Road on Tuesday night.
In front of only 329, one of the smallest crowds at a first home match for many seasons, Town lost 2-1 to Gainsborough Trinity.

Gainsborough, whose coach is the Hucknall-based former Nottingham Forest and Chesterfield defender Steve Blatherwick, finished mid-table last term.

The new-look Yellows were keen to impress freshly-appointed managers Mick Galloway and Andy Miller after the postponement of their opening fixture at Fleetwood Town last Saturday.

Burt they were behind from the seventh minute after a mistake by Galloway himself, who failed to clear. The ball fell to Chris Hall, who crossed for Colin Marrison to turn an excellent shot past goalkeeper James Lindley.

Gainsborough continued to call the tune and Town's only serious chance of the first half was a shot on the turn from Danny Bacon that was saved by ex-Yellows 'keeper Adam Sollitt.

The locals, who picked up five yellow cards during the game, threatened a fightback in the second period with Pete Knox and Laurie Wilson going close.

But their hopes were shattered in the 68th minute when Gainsborough's best player, Ryan Mallon, slammed a shot past Lindley after a poor header by Wilson.

Wilson did pull a goal back when a 20-yard free-kick took a deflection past Sollitt. But although Gary Ricketts headed just wide, they were unable to find an equaliser.

Town are at home again this Saturday – against one of the promotion favourites, Stalybridge Celtic, who are managed by ex-Yellows boss Steve Burr.

TOWN LINE-UP (4-3-1-2) – Lindley/ Smedley McKenzie Winder Cullingworth/ Mitchell Galloway Wilson/ Bacon/ Knox Ricketts. Subs: Kettle (for Bacon 60), Sucharewycz, Ward, Smith M., Smith L.
