IT WILL be all change on the buses from this weekend as the result of sweeping alterations to Trent Barton's services for Hucknall.
A new 'Connect' service will controversially replace the Hucknall Flyer and 45 routes from Sunday to link up with the town's trams and trains.
There will no longer be a Trent Barton service to Bulwell or from the west of Hucknall to Nottingham.
And
although the Notts and Derby bus company is to run some extra buses direct from Hucknall's estates to Nottingham Victoria bus station, via the City Hospital, in the morning and afternoon rush-hour periods on Mondays to Fridays, passengers are worried about the changes.
They have been made because Trent Barton is losing passengers to the trams.
Trent Barton's head of communications, Melvyn Hopwood, points out that 'Connect' will double the frequency between Hucknall's estates and the town centre, travelling in both directions
He says: "All 'Connect' buses will be extended to Hucknall railway station, linking up with every tram, while the new railway station stop will also be handy for the nearby Tesco superstore.
"We will also reinstate a full evening service until after midnight, seven days a week. Connections are available with our own Rainbow 3 bus, running every ten minutes from Hucknall to Nottingham."
To serve Hucknall's Welbeck Estate, Trent Barton will no longer be running buses on Croft Avenue, near Titchfield Park.
"Notts County Council is aware of this and it is looking at passenger numbers," says Mr Hopwood. "I understand it might just be possible for it to divert current contract bus routes."
He says drivers are being briefed and asked to show "special caution and discretion" while passengers get used to the changes.
Mr Hopwood voices thanks for "very positive support" for the new services and adds:
"I think it is broadly acknowledged that the tram, a quality and massively-funded competitor, was always predicted to draw 60% of its custom from local bus routes.
"This it has done and we have needed to reposition our product. It is most gratifying that 'Connect' has been welcomed as a model of integration.
"While I realise that 'Connect' represents a considerable commercial risk and will not be to everyone's convenience, the very positive support shown in consultation letters is indeed encouraging."
Davina Williams, secretary of Hucknall's Reach Out residents' group, which serves the west of the town, said Trent Barton representatives had spoken about the changes at a meeting of the group.
She said: "I have quite a lot of sympathy with the position Trent Barton is facing. I personally think the changes are a good compromise and I hope they prove successful."
