AN INTREPID Hucknall couple are planning an amazing adventure to cycle more than 7,000 miles around Europe – for a holiday!
And what's more, they are to do it not on orthodox bicycles but on recumbent trikes, which mean the riders must sit in laid-back positions.
Keen cyclists John and Dawn Coulson, aged 48 and 39 respectively, will embark on the trip when they start pedalling at the end of this month.
The couple, of Lancaster Road, have been on cycling treks into Europe for the last ten years but have never attempted anything on this scale.
They will travel to Weymouth in Dorset and then catch a ferry to St Malo in northern France.
From there, they will cycle down the west side of France and along the Pyrenees mountains, taking in some of the 'King Of The Mountains' stages from the famous Tour De France cycle race. Next they will travel up the east side of France and enter Italy.
The couple hope to see Mount Vesuvius and the ruined Roman city of Pompeii before moving on to Slovenia and through to Budapest in Hungary.
From there, they will travel along the River Danube through Austria and into Germany before making their way back into France and getting the ferry back to Britain.
The marathon trip will last about six months and John, a former hang-gliding instructor, and Dawn, a cleaner, aim to cover between 60 and 80 miles a day on the trikes. They will stop at camping sites and buy food from local shops.
John said: "Some people think we are mad, cycling all that way, but we do get people who say they wish they could be going with us.
"It's something that we've always wanted to do and I believe that if you want to do something, just do it. Life is too short.
"It's not daunting because we've cycled abroad lots of times before. It's just a bike-ride every day.
"Walking is too slow but cycling is just the right pace to get somewhere while appreciating the countryside.
"We're reasonably fit but after the first couple of weeks, you soon settle into it.
"We chose the trikes specially because they are extremely comfortable. With other bikes, we used to get pain in the shoulders and at the bottom of the back."
John says that when they return, they will probably spend two weeks away from bikes before hopping back on again.
The Coulsons' ultimate goal is to plan and undertake a route around the world.
