THE LONG-awaited Ashfield Festival was axed last weekend as torrential rain scuppered several high-profile community events around the county.
The attraction was set to attract hundreds of revellers from Hucknall to Sutton Lawn last Saturday, but the venue was waterlogged.
Former Olympic and world 100m champion Linford Christie had been due to lead a parade and present the Active Ashfield Games Awards — but bosses at Ashfield District Council said that if it had gone ahead ,it could have caused significant damage to the grounds and posed a danger to safety.
Speaking after the decision was made, the council’s deputy leader, Coun John Wilmott (Lab), of Hucknall, said: “It is with regret that this popular annual event had to be cancelled.
“All options have been considered, including the safety of the public and the extensive damage that would be caused to the park and it was decided that the best option was to cancel the event.
“Many of the contractors had expressed major concerns about the condition of the site.
“Discussions are already taking place for alternative celebrations for the people of Ashfield.”
The council has not yet revealed how much cancelling the show will cost because it is still being audited.
