AN Olympic-themed assembly brought a big surprise for pupils and staff at Bulwell’s Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Catholic Primary School.

A chance meeting between head teacher Pauline Lynch and the school’s former diocesan youth chaplain, Tom Baptist, led to the outreach worker and champion of young people being invited back to the school — as an official Olympics torch bearer.

Tom, who has formed a special bond with the school, was one of 8,000 people across the UK to be chosen to carry the torch. He enjoyed a programme of dance and song by the pupils.
