Band join tribute to miners killed at pit

THE HEARTBROKEN families of four miners killed in a pit tragedy will benefit from cash raised at a concert featuring the Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass band.

The tragedy earlier this year in South Wales sent shockwaves through the community and prompted the launch of the Swansea Valley Mining Appeal Fund.

The Hucknall band took part in a concert arranged by the North Midlands Coal Merchants Association at the ground of Ilkeston Football Club.

Also starring Eastwood Colliery Male Voice Choir, the event attracted a large audience and raised more than £1,000.

Among a varied programme, the Hucknall and Linby band performed the moving hymn tune, ‘Gresford’, which was made all the more poignant by the fact that the piece is widely known as ‘the miners’ hymn’.

Making her debut for the locals was the band’s new principal cornet player, Emma Walton.
