BESTWOOD Village was alight on Friday with festoons of fairy lights as the community came together to turn on their Christmas decorations.
There were plenty of ooohhs and aahhhs as the tree, which was planted four years ago and has been growing well since, lit up the sky and other decorations adorning the district came to life.
The tree, which is positioned between Bestwood Village Social Club and the Community Centre at the heart of the village, was switched on by village stalwart Jack Ashworth who was delighted to be proposed by the Christmas lights committee.
“I felt very honoured to be asked and was delighted to flick the switch at this year’s event,” said Jack, who has lived in the village for 26 years.
Entertainment during the night was provided by children from Hawthorne Primary School who sang Christmas carols and Black Diamond Brass Band added to the festive treat.
Jack added: “The Community Centre was a hive of activity during the event where free mulled wine and mince pies as well as refreshments for the children were on offer.
“The WI also held a stall selling handmade gifts and there was also the chance to buy biscuit decorations and try your luck on the tombola.
“It was a wonderful community event and was well supported with between 200-300 people attending and went without a hitch,” added Jack. “We invested £2,000 needed to upgrade the electrics this year as the tree lights failed in 2011 and we discovered that to enable them to fully function this year and for years to come improvements were needed.”
