A community campaigner and church volunteer from Mansfield is due to be honoured at a special ceremony at Southwell Minster next month.

Church stalwart and Big Snore organiser Pam Bishop is to be made an honorary canon at the minster in recognition of her contribution to good causes and church life in Mansfield, at a ceremony on Sunday, 3rd November.

Pam, who is a regular at St Mark’s Church, in Nottingham Road, is also chair of the House of Laity, and sits on bishop’s council for the Diocese of Southwell.

She also organises the annual Big Snore event at St Mark’s, where dozens of people sleep out to raise funds for homeless charity Framework.

She said: “I am very touched to be invited to become an honorary canon of the minster.

“ It came as a great surprise and I feel honoured and privileged to be asked.”

The announcement has been welcomed from church-leaders and others impacted by Pam’s voluntary work.

Rev Keith Hebden, from St Mark’s, said: “ I am delighted by this news which recognises the hard work and hopefulness of a much-loved member of St Mark’s.”

Mike Smith, headteacher at Queen Elizabeth Church Academy in Chesterfield Road, where Pam is a governor added: “I am delighted that Pam has been invited to serve as an honorary canon.”
