Brass praised at Battle Of The Bands

TRUMPETERS, cornet players and other musicians from Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass were put to the test in a sixth annual Battle Of The Bands contest.

The two-day event was held at the Speedwell Rooms in Staveley in Derbyshire and was organised by the Ireland Colliery Chesterfield Band, supported by Staveley Town Council.

On the first day, competitors performed slow-melody duets and quartets before taking part in the main contest on the second day when each band played their own choice of music.

“Our soprano cornet player, Emma Woods, played a piece from Les Miserables, called ‘Bring Him Home’, to rapturous applause from an appreciative audience,” said Hucknall and Linby Brass spokesman, Ernie Whyley. “The adjudicator in his remarks said the band’s performance contained some very good music in a well-balanced programme.”

The band were due to take part in their biggest engagement to date as the Dispatch went to press last night (Thursday) — the Olympic Torch Pageant at Nottingham Ice Arena.
