‘Bulldog spirit’ as church fair defies rain

THERE was no sign of ‘flaming June’ as determined fundraisers at Bulwell St Mary’s Church headed indoors to stage its annual summer fair.

Despite the disappointment of not being able to hold the popular event outdoors, the church team, led by the rector, the Rev Andy Nicolls, and stalwart church member Jillian Naylor, soldiered on regardless and the outcome was pleasantly rewarding.

By their efforts, the organisers showed a true bulldog spirit and raised £840.

Visitors were given a rare opportunity to go to the top of the church tower, escorted by tower captain Robert Naylor and bellringer Rosie Cheer, and that initiative alone boosted the funds.

Bulwell St Mary’s on Highbury Road is noted for its teamwork and community spirit and these qualities were very much in evidence as the churchfolk pulled together and visitors snapped up bargains and supported a variety of stalls.

Speaking on behalf of the church’s social committee, Jillian said: “Considering that we had to put contingency plans into place because of the weather, the fair was very successful.

“We always seem to come out on the bright side and I would like to thank everyone involved for their help and support.”
