CONGRATULATIONS to Hucknall couple David and Janet Simpson, who have celebrated their golden wedding.

They were married at St John’s Church, Butlers Hill, on November 2 1962.

The couple, who live on Carlingford Road, are both natives of Butlers Hill. David. who is nearly 72, lived on the former Betts Street as a child and Janet (nee Severn), who is 68, was a resident of Hankin Street.

They lived on Hankin Street after their marriage until they moved to their present address in 1974.

The couple first met at Hucknall Constitutional Club, known as the ‘Conny’, on Portland Road, Hucknall.

“We already lived quite close to each other,” said Janet. “In fact, my mother and David’s mum were friends. We are proud to have originated from Butlers Hill.”

David was in the Army for nine years and faced a long journey to get home for the wedding, having just returned from the Middle East country of Bahrain.

He saw service in the Royal Army Service Corps until it was disbanded and he was afterwards in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. He was posted to Germany after the wedding.

Later, David worked for the former Bonser Engineering Company, of Hucknall, and was then employed in the mining industry for 16 years, first at Hucknall ‘Bottom Pit’ and then at Blidworth Colliery, until his retirement.

Jean worked at the former Viyella hosiery factory in Hucknall for about three years in her younger days.

The couple are popular members of Hucknall Liberal Club on West Street, where both enjoy playing dominoes. They have a son, also named David, as well as three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

The family is due to extend to four generations because the couple’s first great-grandchild is ‘on the way’.

The couple will be celebrating their special anniversary with a party at the Horse and Groom pub in Linby tonight.

“With David serving in the Forces, it was quite a hectic time for us at the time of the wedding,” said Janet. “It hardly seems 50 years ago and the time seems to go so fast.”
