A NEW appeal has been made for volunteers to take part in a sponsored swimathon that will be a highlight of the Hucknall-based 2012 International Byron Festival.
The big swim will take place in the pool of Hucknall Leisure Centre on Linby Road on Saturday June 2.
The aim is to support the Help For Heroes charity, which assists British service personnel injured in conflicts.
Anyone wishing to do the swim is asked to ring committee chairman Ken Purslow on 01636 813818 or e-mail him at firstname.lastname@example.org
Another swim event during the festival will be a two-mile Hellespont Challenge, which is also to take place in the leisure centre pool on Sunday June 3.
The challenge will mark Byron’s achievement in swimming the Hellespont, a narrow strait in north-west Turkey, which was the scene of the legendary love story of Hero and Leander in Greek mythology.
About 25 events will take place at the festival, which will be held from Friday June 1 to Sunday June 10. This year’s theme is ‘Byron And Sport’, with some of the events to focus on cricket, boxing, fencing and basketball. The attractions will also include a book fair, a family storytelling hour and an art group open day.
