Campaign to get kids fighting fit

A HEALTH programme for children is about to hit Hucknall — with the ambition of inspiring a lifelong commitment to a fit and active lifestyle.

B Active — B Healthy, which will launch next month, is being delivered through Ashfield District Council in partnership with its Everyone Active leisure centres.

It is available for families with children aged from four to 15 and offers support to make lifestyle changes centred on a balanced diet.

Each programme lasts for ten weeks, with a two-hour session each week featuring an hour of sporting fun and an hour of practical nutritional advice.

The initiative starts at Hucknall Leisure Centre on Linby Road on Monday April 16. Sessions will run from 5 pm to 7 pm, with the programme individually tailored for two age groups — five to seven-year-olds and 11-to-15-year-olds.

Initially, the programme for four-to-six-year-olds will be at the Festival Hall Leisure Centre in Kirkby. But it could also be launched in Hucknall at a later date.

Coun Steve Carroll (Lab), lead member for regeneration and culture at Ashfield Council, said: “We are committed to supporting our residents to improve their health and wellbeing.

“We are delighted to be able to offer this new programme in partnership with Everyone Active. It encourages local families to increase their physical-activity levels and to learn how to eat a healthy, balanced diet in a fun and enjoyable environment”.

B Active — B Healthy costs £2 per session or £16 in advance for the ten weeks.

Places will be limited and must be booked in advance. To sign up, ring Dianne Holmes, a health and physical activity officer at Ashfield Council, on 01623 457233 or email

Those who take part will also get discount offers for activities at Everyone Active leisure centres.
