A swimming teacher from Underwood has beat the rest to win the Kellogg’s Swimtastic Swimming Teacher of the Year Award.

In a glittering ceremony that followed a day of fun in the pool with Britain’s top swimming stars, Marine Mace was declared the Gold Award winner in the Top Teacher category.

“I felt like a star for the day and just couldn’t believe it when I won the gold award,” said Marine of Alfreton Road. “The ceremony was just like the Oscars and it was very exciting with big screens.

“It was very glitzy and glamorous - it was all rather surreal.”

It was a group of young Saturday morning swimming students who attend lessons with Marine at Hucknall Leisure Centre, where she works, who put her forward for the award.

“I feel really privileged to be nominated,” added Marine. “The girls and their parents who nominated also came to the ceremony and when my name was called out they were thrilled.”

As part of the special day, Marine and the other nominees took part in activities at Cocks Moors Woods, Birmingham, with Olympic and paralympic swimmers including Ross Davenport.

“It was a thrilling weekend and we were all treated amazingly,” added Marine who first taught her daughter to swim 40 years ago. “I hope it inspires more swimmers of the future.”
